Once upon a time, traditional royalty publishing houses were in charge of marketing their authors’ books. But as the publishing business has grown more competitive and publishing houses have tightened their belts, more and more marketing responsibilities fall on a writers’ shoulders. This consultation with Jolene provides ideas authors can use to market their books online, in print, and in person.

Query Letter Coaching

A good query letter is the first step in convincing a book, magazine, or blog editor to publish a writer’s work. Jolene guides writers through the steps required to craft a letter that persuades an editor to request your manuscript or article for consideration.

Platform Building Consultation

New writers who want to pitch book ideas to editors at traditional publishing houses need to be more than good writers. They also need an established and growing platform for marketing their books. Jolene coaches writers who purchase this service in a variety of online and print-based platform-building techniques.

Publication Path Consultation

Many writers believe the only path to publication is through a traditional publishing house. This consultation with Jolene acquaints writers with a variety of routes to publication and helps writers determine which one is best for them.

Book Proposal Coaching

Book proposal coaching guides authors through this complicated but necessary process for those seeking a traditional royalty publishing contract. Jolene teaches writers the components of either fiction or non-fiction book proposals and provides step-by-step instruction about how to pitch a book manuscript.

Writers learn how to prune weaker story elements and focus a story line either in person or in a virtual, online session

Write to Publish Groups

Anne facilitates writers’ groups of three to four people. The groups focus on helping writers achieve their publishing goals thorough accountability, time-management, targeted lessons on writing techniques, editing based on a writer’s specific publishing goals, and group critique and support. Each writer can submit 4,000 words per month for Anne to edit, one formal lesson a month, one group critique a month, and a quarterly lesson from an industry insider.

Testimonials & Featured Clients

Kim Harms, Freelance writer and contributor to CT Women

Jolene Philo has been an amazing resource to me in the process of writing my first book. I am a freelance writer, with a degree in English and a Journalism emphasis. I’ve freelanced for a number of years for a variety of publications including CT Women, Guideposts, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Creation Illustrated and others. But writing a book is a different and intimidating world, and Jolene knows her way around in it.

She critiqued my book proposal and the first couple chapters of my book prior to a writer’s conference I attended in Chicago this summer. At that conference, an editor from Tyndale House read through my proposal and told me that she couldn’t find anything that she would change. She then suggested a couple publishing houses that she said “would take a good long look” at this proposal if it was sent to them.

I am still working on writing the book and on finding an agent, but I am confident that the book will become a reality in the future. Jolene’s wisdom has been an integral part of my book journey.

Lyn Vanderbrake

I highly recommend Jolene Philo – author of many books, teacher, mentor, workshop and conference speaker – as a writing coach. I began working with Jolene about a year ago, upon the recommendation of another published writer, speaker and teacher – Elaine Cooper.

I especially liked Jolene’s idea/brainstorming sessions she had with me that sparked unique angles in my writing. This is something above-and-beyond, not usually found in coaching sessions, on the level which Jolene took me. I appreciated her attention to detail, not only in the writing, editing, development of the project, but also in legalities with publishing.

Along with this Jolene guided me through my first book proposal and acquisition of a Christian literary agent. I am now under contract with them, and my book proposal is to begin being pitched next week to three major publishers.

This would never have happened without Jolene’s guidance, her positive energy she brings to any setting, years of expert experience, networking with other professionals, as well as her own God-given gift of writing.

I will forever by thankful for Jolene’s coaching, dedication to her work and investment into my career she wholeheartedly gave – and still gives, as I periodically make appointments with her to help bring my writing up to yet another level.
